All you need to know before getting an MRI Scan

MRI Scan

The MRI Scan or the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scan is a highly effective diagnostic procedure that produces high quality images of the human body. It is vastly different from an X-ray or a CT scan as it does not harm you in the long run.

Why must you go for an MRI Scan over an X-Ray or a CT brain scan?

  • It is a non-radioactive imaging approach for advanced diagnosis which has no serious adverse effects.
  • The MRI brain scan incorporates a variety of complex imaging sequences to perfectly match your concerns.
  • Soft tissue delineation is significantly better with MRI than with CT scans and X-rays.

MRI Scan Cost

An MRI scan test price is based upon a few parameters, including the consumables used, the number of films used, and the amount of time necessary. However, note that if your physician’s prescription includes the words “CEMRI” or “Contrast,” you’ll need a Contrast-Enhanced MRI Scan which will require further preparations.

What is an MRI Scan with Contrast?

While MRI scans produce clear images of high-density organs in the body, organs with a low-density can be challenging to detect. You may be given a distinctive ‘Contrast Material’ – either through injection or orally to make the examined organs stand out sharper in the Scan results.

When might your doctor suggest an MRI Scan?

  • Thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic tumors
  • Biliary tract anomalies, liver cirrhosis, and pancreatitis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Abnormalities of the cardiovascular system and vascular inflammation

MRI Scan Procedure

Once you enter the MRI Scanning room, you need to lie down on the table connected to the cylindrical scanner. The radiologist at the computer will be operating the scanner and assisting you through an intercom. The technician will be capturing images through the scanner and on its completion, you will be asked to wait till the images are reviewed.

MRI Scan Preparations

Prior to an MRI scan, little or no preparation is needed. You will need to take off any metal jewelry on yourself and change into a robe.  Because the MRI scanners employ magnets, no metal objects must be present in the scanning room.

Time Taken For MRI Scan Reports

After the completion of the process, hard copies are generated and interpreted by the radiologist in the form of a report which may take 24-48 hours at the most.

Benefits of an MRI Scan

  • It is a non-invasive and painless imaging procedure
  • It does not require contact with radiation.
  • It is a more accurate diagnostic procedure for soft-tissue parts, like the liver and heart.
  • It is useful in detecting cancer, cardiovascular diseases, bone and muscle problems.
  • The bile duct can be assessed using an MRI scan as it is non-invasive and does not require contrast injections.
  • It is a benign alternative to X-Ray, Angiography, and CT for Cardiovascular anomalies

Frequently Asked Questions

The duration of an MRI scan varies from 15 to 90 minutes, according to the body part getting examined and the number of image sequences.

The MR scanner is a wide, illuminated cylinder with openings on both ends.

Some MRI tests necessitate the use of contrast in which a chemical is used to boost the amount of fluid in the body.

Although usually a safe procedure, we advise you to consult with your doctor and the MRI department if you have a metal in your body or if you are pregnant.

There are no known ill-effects of MRIs on pregnant women, however it is generally advisable not to scan pregnant women. Consult your doctor beforehand if the case is critical and you would be required to take an invasive test otherwise.
